InterContinental Planted Its Flag Inside a Stadium Complex

Elegant hotel lobby with seating and warm lighting

IHG has opened the InterContinental Taipei, a 347-room property that the company is positioning as the flagship of its InterContinental brand in Taiwan. The hotel sits inside the Taipei Dome complex in the city’s Xinyi District, one of the capital’s busiest commercial and entertainment neighborhoods.

Hotels attached to large stadium and entertainment developments are a growing pattern in Asia, where operators want to capture event-driven demand from concerts, sports and conventions. A property in that kind of complex can fill rooms on show nights while still competing for ordinary business and leisure guests the rest of the week.

For travelers, the practical details matter most. Opening rates start at roughly $360 a night, or 66,000 IHG One Rewards points for members booking an award stay. That points price puts the hotel in the upper tier of the loyalty program’s award chart, so it will likely appeal most to people with a stash of points to burn.

The opening also underlines how aggressively the major chains are expanding in East Asia, where domestic and regional travel keeps recovering. Anyone planning a Taipei trip around a concert or sporting event should compare prices early, because rates near big-ticket dates tend to climb quickly.
