Brightline West confirmed on Tuesday that it has not yet finalised a $6 billion federal loan for its planned high-speed rail line to Las Vegas. The financing would come through the Railroad Rehabilitation and Improvement Financing program, and the company said it is still in discussions, much as it said in March.
The company says it remains focused on moving the project toward construction and still expects to open in 2029. It also says the line would take about four years to build once full-scale construction begins, a timeline that leaves little slack if the money does not arrive soon.
A University of Nevada, Las Vegas civil engineering professor, Neil Opfer, told the local Fox station the project would likely pause without federal funding, though he added that building could move quickly once financing is in place. Brightline West also stressed that its finances are separate from Brightline Florida, which recently announced a restructuring agreement with its stakeholders.
For travelers hoping to skip the Southern California to Las Vegas drive, nothing has changed on the ground yet. The 2029 date is still the official target, but it now depends on a loan that has been pending for months.
