Next week, the skies over Portugal’s Alentejo region will be dotted with balloons. The International Hot Air Balloon Festival runs from Nov. 7 to 12, according to Euronews Travel’s November planner, and it has been held since 1997, making it a long-standing fixture on the regional calendar.
Alentejo is a rural area of rolling plains, cork oak forests and whitewashed towns in southern Portugal, and it is generally less crowded than the Algarve coast to its south. A balloon festival fits that landscape well, because wide open terrain gives pilots room to launch and spectators room to watch.
The trip pairs naturally with a second event in the same region. The Vine and Wine Festival in Borba runs Nov. 11 to 15, so travelers who time their visit for the middle of the week can see both in one trip, with the balloon festival wrapping up on the day after the wine festival begins.
Flight schedules for balloon events are weather-dependent, and organizers can postpone launches if winds are too strong. Visitors should check the festival’s official channels for the daily program and book accommodation early, as rural lodging in the area can be limited during event weeks.
