Runners and spectators are heading to Greece next weekend for the 43rd edition of the Athens Marathon, billed as The Authentic. The event takes place on Nov. 7 and 8, according to Euronews Travel’s November guide, and follows the course from the town of Marathon to the Panathenaic Stadium in central Athens.
The route is the one that gave the race distance its legend. The story of an ancient messenger carrying news from the battlefield at Marathon to Athens inspired the modern marathon, and running the course finishing in the marble stadium used for the first modern Olympics in 1896 is a draw for distance runners from around the world.
The event spans two days, a common format for large city races that combine the main marathon with shorter distances and community runs. Specific start times, distances and registration status were not included in the guide, so anyone hoping to take part or to cheer from the course should consult the race organizers’ official site.
For non-runners, race weekend is also a reasonable moment to see Athens in mild autumn weather, well after summer crowds have thinned. Visitors should expect road closures along the route and book hotels in advance, since marathon weekends tend to fill rooms near the finish.
