Sri Lanka Set an October Record With One Market Doing the Heavy Lifting

Sri Lanka welcomed 168,625 foreign visitors in October 2026, according to figures from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority. That is the highest total ever recorded for an October, edging up 2.1 percent from 165,193 a year earlier and clearing the previous October record of 153,123 set back in 2018.

India did most of the work. It sent 62,211 travelers, roughly 37 percent of the month’s arrivals. The United Kingdom followed with 12,402, then China with 11,190, Australia with 8,509 and Germany with 8,027. Together the top ten source markets accounted for about 74.7 percent of all arrivals, which shows how concentrated the island’s tourism mix remains.

The busiest single day was October 17, when 7,045 visitors arrived. For a country that has spent recent years rebuilding its tourism sector, a record month is a welcome milestone, and one that arrives just ahead of the winter high season along the island’s southern and western coasts.

There is a caveat worth keeping in mind. A separate local headline suggests year-to-date arrivals, at more than 1.7 million, are still running behind last year’s pace, so one strong October does not erase the broader picture. Even so, the record underlines how strongly regional demand, particularly from India, is shaping the recovery.
