Birmingham’s Christmas Markets Opened, but the Station Will Be Closed on Christmas

A busy Christmas market with lights in the evening

Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market and Christmas in Cathedral Square opened on November 5 and run until December 24. TravelWise reports that the Frankfurt market is free to enter with no booking, with hours of 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. On November 8 it opens at 1 p.m., and Cathedral Square closes at 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

The bigger planning issue comes after the markets close. Birmingham New Street will have no train services from December 24 to 28 because of engineering work, with services due back on December 29. The station building and Grand Central stay accessible. London Northwestern services from Euston terminate at Birmingham International, with replacement buses taking passengers into the city, and National Rail has published route-by-route alternatives.

Other attractions run longer. The covered ice rink and Big Wheel in Centenary Square stay open until January 3 and are closed on Christmas Day. Skating costs 11.50 pounds off-peak or 14 pounds at peak times for 45-minute sessions, with online booking recommended, while Big Wheel rides cost 7 to 8 pounds.

If you are visiting for the markets, there is no rail problem before December 24. The closure matters for anyone planning to travel through Birmingham over Christmas week, who should check National Rail’s alternatives before booking tickets or hotel nights.
