The State Department updated its travel advisory for Turks and Caicos on July 7, keeping the destination at Level 2 and telling visitors to exercise increased caution because of high crime rates and strict firearms laws. The advisory specifically flags that it’s illegal to carry firearms or ammunition into the islands — including a single stray bullet left in a bag by mistake — and that a U.S. carry permit provides no protection from prosecution.

Saint Lucia received a similar update on July 10, reaffirmed at Level 2 over violent crime, with the State Department citing armed robbery, assault, burglary, and homicide affecting both residents and tourists on the island.

Neither advisory tells Americans to avoid the islands outright — Level 2 is the second-lowest of the State Department’s four-tier scale and simply means “exercise increased caution.” But it’s a reminder that these advisories get revisited regularly, and the specifics are worth a quick read before you book: the firearms rule in particular has caught travelers off guard in Turks and Caicos in past years.
