Germany’s Family Rail Deal Is No Longer a Limited-Time Gamble

Family boarding a train together

Deutsche Bahn’s discounted long-distance Family Ticket has been made permanent. It goes on sale again on October 26 for travel starting November 1, turning what had been a temporary offer into a standing part of the fare menu.

The price is easy to remember: 59.99 euros one way and 99.99 euros for a return, covering a group of up to five people. For a family on a long German route, that can undercut the cost of individual tickets by a wide margin, especially on faster intercity services.

There are rules. A group needs at least one child under 14 and one passenger aged 15 or over. The travelers do not have to be related, so grandparents, friends and other groupings with a child are in scope, which widens the appeal for visitors as well as residents.

For tourists planning a rail-based family holiday in Germany, the permanence removes some uncertainty about whether a deal will exist when plans solidify. As always, check terms, seat reservation options and any peak-period limits at purchase, since conditions can differ by route and date.
