Turkey has opened a 153-kilometer upgraded railway section between Cerkezkoy and Kapikule, near the Bulgarian border, and the payoff is already visible in the timetable for the Sofia to Istanbul train. The service now reaches Istanbul Halkali at 07:21, compared with 09:56 before the upgrade.
The westbound schedule has shifted too. The train now departs Istanbul at 23:13, where it used to leave at 20:00. Travelers should read the new times carefully, because the later departure changes when they need to be at the station and how the evening around the trip works.
An earlier morning arrival is a real convenience for visitors to the city. It lets passengers reach hotels in time for breakfast, make use of a full first day and avoid the awkward mid-morning arrival that often leaves bags and little else. It also helps onward connections within Istanbul’s commuter and metro network.
The upgrade is part of broader investment in rail links across southeastern Europe, where overnight and regional trains still compete with budget flights and buses. Anyone planning the journey should confirm the latest timetable and ticket availability with the operators before booking, since schedules can change.
